Former Eagles Cheerleader Has Something New To Cheer
About
Fans Helping Fans, a nonprofit charitable
organization dedicated to helping Philadelphia Eagles
fans in financial need, announced its first grant of
the 2005-2006 season. The
grant went to Regina M., a former Eagles cheerleader
currently living in Florida.
“We made four grants last year, our first year,” said
Reverend Jeff Rumble of California, Chair of FHF’s
Grant Distribution Committee, and we’ve picked
up right where we left off for our second season.”
Regina M. used to live in Philadelphia
and had cheered for the Eagles as an alternate cheerleader
for a few games years ago. When she moved to Florida, she
saw firsthand how damaging the Sunshine State’s
famed hurricanes could be.
“Regina was evacuated twice last
year because of hurricanes,” said Rumble, “and
the unexpected expense of staying in a hotel and losing
food supplies when the power went out really put a strain
on her. She’s a single mother of two children,
so things got really tight.”
Fans Helping Fans helped Regina M.
by paying for overdue payments on her car, enabling
her not only to catch up from the hurricane-related
expenses, but also to keep her car and be able to continue
to get to work as a teacher’s
assistant.
“Once a fan, always a fan,” remarked Emily
Lawrence, a member of FHF’s Grant Distribution
Committee. “We’re glad that FHF could
help out a fan as far away as Florida and let her know
that Eagles fans are always part of the ‘family’ no
matter where they go.”

FHF
Inaugural Year Grant Recap
By Emily Lawrence, FHF Board Member
Fans Helping Fans, a nonprofit charitable organization
dedicated to helping Philadelphia Eagles fans in financial
need, finished its highly successful inaugural year by
making four grants to Philadelphia Eagles fans in financial
need, and it continues making grants in its second year.
“We are thrilled that in our very first year,
we were able to help fans throughout the area,” said
Reverend Jeff Rumble of California, Chair of FHF’s
Grant Distribution Committee.” “We’re
also proud that the grantees were from Delaware, Maryland,
New Jersey and Pennsylvania,” he added, “so
we’re not just limited to Philadelphia.”
As reported previously, the first
grant was to a fan in Delaware, Mike P., a graduate
student who lost everything in an apartment fire. FHF granted $1,000.00 to
replace professional and school textbooks and resources
so Mike could continue his studies. As the first
recipients of an FHF grant, Mike and his wife were treated
to a very special presentation when Philadelphia Eagle
Hank Fraley surprised Mike at the NovaCare Center to
present the check. “I was stunned by the
award,” said Mike. “You can see how
much people care.”
FHF’s second award, also reported earlier, went
to a family in New Jersey that took in four young relatives
from foster care so that they could remain united. The
family needed help to construct a bedroom for the boys,
and FHF helped out with a $1,000.00 gift card to Home
Depot.
For its third grant, FHF reached
out to one of the smallest Eagles fans – one year-old Luke M., who was born
with respiratory problems and needed to be on a ventilator
at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Although
Luke was physically able to be discharged from CHOP,” explained
Steve Reynolds, another member of the FHF Board, “the
hospital wouldn’t allow it until it was confirmed
that Luke’s home had sufficient power and wiring
to make sure the ventilator would always function.” FHF’s
grant of $1,000.00 paid for an electrician to upgrade
the wiring in the home of the Coal Township, PA baby.
Rounding out the year was FHF’s fourth grant to
Jeff C., a fan in Maryland who needed help buying medical
supplies and paying his utility bill. “He
got caught short after becoming unemployed,” explained
Rumble, “and, as a diabetic, needed to keep buying
test strips even though he didn’t have health insurance.” Fans
Helping Fans replenished Jeff’s stock of medical
supplies and also paid an outstanding utility bill.
With one successful season under
its belt, Fans Helping Fans already has begun making
grants and considering applications for its second
year. “As long
as there are Eagles fans in need out there,’ said
Rumble, “we’ll keep trying to help.”
